Meals by the River

Nestled on the banks of the wide brown Ewaso Ngiro River, where elephants come to browse the trees around us, meals at Elephant Watch Camp are feasts for the senses.

Carefully prepared from the freshest, most tasty, sun-kissed ingredients, each meal is an indulgence that celebrates our delicious Afro-Italian heritage but keeps you healthy and perfectly topped up.

Early in the morning, just after dawn as the birds start to sing, a pot of steaming hot coffee or spiced Swahili tea with freshly baked biscuits will be brought to your room to enjoy in the cool air.

Around you, a host of small, wild creatures yawn and stretch in the undergrowth nearby or warm themselves in the first rays of the sun.

They are as much a part of Camp as the human occupants, so we're always respectful of our neighbours, but please don't feed them. Monkeys will be keeping a beady eye on the biscuit bowl, so once you're done it's best to leave your tea tray zipped up safely inside your tent.

Breakfast is served on the banks of the river under soaring Acacia elatior trees by the Mess Tent or as scrumptious picnic while out on safari with elephants. Our homemade granola, yogurt and freshly baked treats are served alongside colourful arrays of fruit, fresh rounds of Kenyan coffee or tea, and then followed by pancakes, porridge or a tasty cooked breakfast with your favourite eggs.

Lunch in Camp is mostly a feast of fresh vegetables and salads, with fresh fruit juice, mineral water or wines. Or you can take it with you as a picnic on a day out with elephants.

After your adventures exploring the unfolding frontier, nothing beats coming home to the comforts of Camp - enjoying a mellow sundowner by the river, checking in with the outside world, uploading photographs for friends and family at home, or dashing off for a hot bucket-shower to rid yourself of the dust of the day.

Then it's time to dress up for cocktails by the fire, before enjoying a sumptuous meal and listening to riveting stories of the wild.

After sunset, we recommend dressing in longer clothes to keep any biting insects at bay, as we eat out by the fire or under the stars in the dry river bed.

Precious moments are shared at leisure under the vast constellations of a stunning Samburu night sky, with the glow and warmth of a fire close by.

Every now and then, we'll also gather everyone around a massive tree-root table beneath colourful canopies in the Mess tent to enjoy round table discussions as a larger group.

The food is delicious - sourced locally from farms in the foothills of Mt Kenya, and prepared fresh each day in our immaculate kitchen.

Using the best of Kenya's vegetables and fruit in our mostly plant-based menu, both raw and cooked, we cater to every palate and sensitivity and delight in serving our unique fusion of Afro-Italo dishes.

Meat is a special delicacy added on top so we take great pains to ensure that each bite is organic, free-range or pasture-raised with high ethical standards.

It's truly an honour to share this very special and magical wilderness with you. We hope that you'll come to love and treasure it as much as we do.
